Sisters, Doing It For Themselves?

I eventually gave up on the study last night and switched on the telly for a while before bed. Channel 4's 100 Greatest Comedy Stand-Ups was on and it made for depressing viewing. Ironic, eh? Ironic that Ed Byrne and his Alanis Morrissette routine featured, certainly.

Only 6 of the 100 who featured are women. I've been saying it for a long time and people disagree with me for the most part but I remain convinced that people do not like funny women, just as they do not like very clever ones. A sweeping generalisation, I know, but when it comes to the braying masses I think it's true. Shane Hegarty touched on it before when he wondered why Maeve Higgins has never appeared on The Panel and Una summed it up nicely in her comment on said post: The deeper meaning: women aren’t supposed to be as funny as men in all in anyways, so let’s just rotate pretty people that have a media profile.

I don't think I'm a feminist (I'm not sure though, because I'm not too sure what "feminist" means). There are times when I feel duty bound to stand up for myself and my vagina though. I'm due to attend a seminar tomorrow on women in the workplace, which I have mixed emotions about. It sounds very 1970s girlpower, doesn't it? I was telling the Gorilla about it a while ago, and he was appalled to think that such a thing might be necessary in 2007. Being an equinanimous sort he found it hard to imagine that anyone would feel at a disadvantage because of their sex (except when it comes to relationships, where for some reason he believes women to have an advantage. Looking at him, I don't fucking think so). I was telling him about how I've experienced it in work with the likes of this shitehawk and how I often hear women in positions of power being spoken of in very masculine terms. I say I have mixed emotions about it because I too would like to think that such a seminar is not necessary, just as I'd like to think that mace and attack alarms are not necessary for the walk home after a night out. I'll be interested to hear what they have to say.

I don't know about Mairead Higgins but both Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin & Mairead Farrell are regulars on the panel and are as funny as any of the guys on it. And both aren't exactly unattractive either. I don't know about other guys (or care actually) but I think women that are funny & intelligent are much more attractive. I mean who the hell wants to have a conversation with someone that's not that smart and not funny ???

A Seminar on Women in the workplace ?? That sounds like a guy came up with that idea. Sounds a little patronising if you ask me.Sounds like women are somehow "Special", and not in a good way. I don't think one gender needs special treatment nowadays. Just my opinion.

Ah, AJ- not only is he devastatingly handome but he's sound too. I'm thinking of setting up a fanclub...

(Rosie, if this is the second time this comment appears I'm trusting you to delete one of them, so I don't look like a berk.)

i dunno, AJ. i was at a screening of the panel recently and it was interesting to see how Aoibhínn said virtually nothing during the comedy bits (which they tape about an hour's footage for). she comes into her own interacting with the guests though, and was very gracious even when Seán Kelly was being an utter prick to her. duno if that part was aired in the final cut, but i hope so. he's not such a suave gent under pressure. i don't find Mairéad funny at all (either on TV or radio).

my mam thinks Aoibhínn's funny-looking, if that counts. i think my mam is mental and/or needs new goggles.

re the seminar, first thing i asked was who had designed it, second was who was delivering it. seems it's a bona fide initiative by a group of female consultants to address issues that do still arise in the workplace, despite us all being old enough to know better (like my allergy to paunchy middle-aged chauvanistic academics). the Gorilla reckoned that it's they who should attend a "don't be a prat" seminar, but i can see how that might be more difficult to market. old dogs don't like to learn new tricks.

berkness avoided, Red, whatever you were up to...

Thanks Red, don't think I'm unique though in preferring a reasonable looking woman with intelligence and good sense of humour to a gorgeous woman who can't string two sentences together and who has no sense of humour. The ability to make someone else think and laugh is hugely underrated. I mean why do you think so many people read Rosie's blog? Personally, I read it because she's funny, extremely articulate, more intelligent than me (that's not really saying much though) and can curse like a Fucking Trooper (when appropriate). And sure....apparrently she looks like a "bit of a ride" in a black bikini. But that's beside the point.

Rosie, I think your mam is right, Aoibhinn is kinda funny looking, but in a kinda cute way.

ew....(ha take that)

"ew", Manuel?

is it because i used the V word? (last time i wrote vagina in a post, Gingerbeard told me it was "disgusting" and threatened to stop reading)

or do you find AJ's flattery objectionable?

or have you been at the sherry?

You're absolutely right there Rosie - me and my mates are always talking about how much we love stupid, humourless women.

I mean, christ, who wants a girl you can have a good laugh and an intelligent conversation with?

it was a revenge ew.......

suspicions confirmed!

(on both counts)
